Description
Niedzwetzky is a wild relative of the domestic apple. Once common in its native home of Kyrgyzstan where it is thought all apple trees originated, there are now only around 100 specimens remaining largely as a result of agricultural expansion and development. The Niedzwetsky apple is an iconic symbol in the region and is easily distinguishable by its bright red flesh, so much so that Niedzwetskyana has come to mean ‘red inside’. The red pigment of the apple is thought to have medicinal properties, and in some areas is eaten, especially by children, to boost their immune system. Because they are so attractive, local people have been known to dry out the apples and use them as decorations.
